Understanding COBie
- COBie simplifies asset data delivery in a structured format.
- Course focuses on understanding COBie's impact on projects.
- Intended for project managers, designers, and contractors.
- Learn practical COBie creation and data verification.
- Gain insights on managing COBie in BIM-led projects.
Overview
The Online COBie Training Course focuses on understanding Construction Operations Building Information Exchange (COBie) as a non-proprietary data format for asset data in BIM projects. The course covers COBie principles, spreadsheet structure, and practical applications through case studies. It is designed for project managers, designers, and contractors to grasp COBie requirements and implementation. Participants will gain insights into COBie's role in project management, data exchange, and its alignment with ISO 19650 procedures. Upon completion, attendees receive a BIM Academy certificate accredited by Northumbria University.

Course Content
Understanding COBie: Construction Operations Building Information Exchange (COBie) is a non-proprietary data format for the publication of a subset of BIM information, focused on delivering asset data in non-geometric form. This may sound complex, but the principles of COBie are straight forward.
COBie is a clear format for delivering assets’ data. It is typically a spreadsheet file with some rules on the structuring and content of the provided data. The COBie spreadsheet contains several tabs which list information on the assets facilities, floors, spaces, systems, installed equipment, documents etc. Every entry in the worksheet is connected with another one from another worksheet. It is intended to work as a convenient reference on information that is otherwise hidden in the large amount of drawings and files generated on a project.
This Understanding COBie training course will cover how key information is presented in a COBie format and how it can influence different aspects of the project. This course takes a hands-on approach to how COBie works, demonstrated through case studies and live projects.
Learning Outcomes
- Introduction to COBie.
- What is COBie and how is it used.
- Outline of ISO 19650.
- How COBie fits within ISO 19650 procedures.
- COBie in detail: what do all those spreadsheet tabs mean?
- How COBie can be created: software exports and merging COBie files.
- How COBie fits in with the Digital Plan of Work and Uniclass.
- How to ensure your data requirements are met.
- Verification, checking your data requirements are delivered.
- Learn from practical examples and case studies.
Key Takeaways
You will learn the difference between documentation and data. As well as how COBie can influence the exchange of information (recorded) at a management level, plus gain a detailed understanding of what is COBie, how to manage it effectively as well as how to apply to your own BIM-led projects.
