Introduction to Structural Reliability

The Online Structural Reliability Training is split into two parts, aiming to introduce participants to reliability concepts. The webinars, led by Dr. Boulent Imam, cover topics such as structural safety, random variables, and the First Order Reliability Method. Attendees will learn how to estimate the probability of structural failure and understand concepts like limit state codes and partial factors.

Course Content

Part 1 – 23rd November 2020 – 13:00-16:00 BST
Part 2 – 1st December 2020 – 13:00-16:00 BST

Split into two parts, these will take place on the 23rd November and the 1st December as 2x 3 hour sessions, both running from 13:00 – 16:00 BST. This is a great opportunity for anyone interested in getting familiar with reliability concepts, with the webinar starting from basic principles and developing into some simple numerical examples. The webinars will  be broadcast live on zoom offering attendees a great opportunity to take part in regular Q&A breaks, and for those who would like to attend but are unable to fit the webinar into their schedule they will be available to watch a recording of the session for a limited time.

Agenda

Part 1 – This webinar will start with reviewing the concepts of structural safety and reliability. Random variables will then be introduced and will be used within the context of basic structural reliability analysis to showcase how to estimate probability of structural failure. A number of examples demonstrating the application of structural reliability concepts will be covered.

Part 2 – Following on from the first seminar, the First Order Reliability Method (FORM) will be introduced and its application for estimating the probability of structural failure will be demonstrated by using a numerical example. The background behind simulation methods, including Monte Carlo simulation, will be briefly presented. Subsequently, the concepts of structural reliability will be linked with limit state codes and partial factors and an example of reliability-based design and code calibration will be demonstrated.

 Presenter

Dr Boulent Imam is a Senior Lecturer in Civil Engineering Structures at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering in the University of Surrey and Programme Director for the MSc Programme in Bridge Engineering. He has been extensively involved in the area of fatigue of bridges, carrying out research in this area collaborating with national and European infrastructure owners and managers, such as Network Rail, Highways England, TWI. His research has contributed towards in-depth understanding of the fatigue behaviour of riveted railway bridges and developed methods for more reliable quantification of their remaining fatigue life taking into account historical rail traffic, novel fatigue assessment methods, loading, resistance and modelling uncertainties as well as system effects. Later on, Dr imam extended his work on fatigue towards developing fracture mechanics guidelines for the assessment of fatigue crack growth in steel bridge details towards the optimisation of inspection and maintenance planning in steel bridges. Recently, Dr Imam research has expanded towards understanding the potential impacts of climate change on bridge deterioration and quantifying the resilience of bridge infrastructure against extreme events.

Testimonials

We’ve helped thousands of professionals grow their skills and confidence. Hear directly from the people who’ve taken our training courses.

The course was exceptional, well run in terms of delivery of information, IT online course but seamless. Very interesting examples of temporary works failures applicable to the businesses we worked in. Break out activities / group examples worked very well and were again well managed by the trainer. Fantastic course, I will recommend to others! Best course I have attended in years!

CITB Temporary Works Co-Ordinator

Black & Veatch

The trainers knowledge was excellent and I liked his examples and how he could relate them to every day relatable examples that we could all understand. Coming from different industries and sectors his examples were a common ground. It was handled very well virtually and the engagement worked with his questioning and answering
