There have been a number of significant changes to highway surfacing materials, new European and British Standards and revised Highway Agency guidance in particular.
So how are the new materials, standards and guidance performing in practice?
Do stone mastic asphalts and thin surfacing technologies perform better than traditional hot rolled asphalt?
What about durability?
Are the new approaches an improvement, do they have limitations and if so what are they and how are they overcome.
This one day course considers all the changes and their impact, and provides clear and practical guidance on how to achieve durable materials from bituminous mixtures.
Supported by extensive case studies, this course will enable you to understand, specify and manage bituminous mixtures for new highway construction, for repairs to existing highways and to confidently troubleshoot poor performance. It will include specific reference to:
The new European Standards production of asphalts and macadams.
The British Standard, BS594987, for the transporting, laying and compacting of bituminous mixtures.
The revisions to the Highway Agency 900 series of the Specification for Highway Works
The tutor is a chartered civil engineer with considerable experience in developing specifications for bituminous mixtures. He is an acknowledged subject expert in the field, recognised by membership of the Institute of Asphalt Technology and membership of a number of UK and European committees that develop and maintain the standards and specifications for road construction materials.
Objectives
On completion of the course participants should:
Have a clear understanding of the factors influencing the successful use of bituminous mixtures,
Be capable of selecting and specifying appropriate mix types for a range of pavement layers and site conditions,
Appreciate how to maintain surfaces in a safe condition,
Be confident of identifying problems and recognise the range of remedial and preventative measures available,
Be aware of the new standards for bituminous mixtures and their impact on current practice.
Intended for
Engineering and technical staff of consultants, local authorities and building and civil contractors responsible for the specification and/or control of works on roads, other heavily trafficked paved areas and footways.
