THE NEW CODE ON GEOTECHNICAL DESIGN
Eurocodes have been talked about for a long time, but this is no longer a matter for the future as the new Standards are with us and are being implemented NOW. The Eurocode suite of documents is mandatory and these normative documents represent a significant change in status compared with the familiar UK Codes of Practice.
All engineering design professionals need to know about the changes, how they will affect their everyday professional life, and how they will need to help their clients understand the changes. This course is aimed at helping those professionals working in and around the design of geotechnical structures to comprehend the implications of these new Standards.
The course is outlined below and comprises two linked one day courses, the first for those involved in design of geotechnical structures and the second for those involved in specifying, doing and reporting the ground investigation in all its facets.
DAY 1
EUROCODE 7 PART 1 – DESIGN OF GEOTECHNICAL STRUCTURES
This part of the course will introduce the design sections of the Eurocode documents. Some new aspects to the design procedures will be illustrated.
Course Structure
Session 1 The Eurocode suite and Introduction to Eurocode 7 Part 1
Session 2 Parameter characterisation
Session 3 Design for foundations
Session 4 Design for slopes and retaining walls
Session 5 Discussion and closure
DAY 2
EUROCODE 7 PART 2 – GROUND INVESTIGATION AND TESTING
This second part of the course will introduce the large number of new Eurocode documents including timetables and status. Those aspects of investigation procedure that are changing will be illustrated, with workshop session to help delegates explore the significance of some of these changes.
Course Structure
Session 1 Introduction to Eurocode 7 Part 2
Planning investigations
Session 2 Sampling and measurement
In situ and laboratory testing
Session 3 Soil and rock description
Session 4 Affected codes and Reporting
Session 5 Discussion and closure
