Course Content

This NEC4 ECSC Intermediate Training workshop introduces you to the NEC4 Engineering and Construction Short Contract and Short Subcontract – assuming attendees already have an understanding of the suite of NEC contracts. It focuses on practical issues in preparing the pre-contract information and the post-contract management. An overview of the main clauses and the changes from NEC3 is followed by a review of the requirements for preparation of Contract Data and Scope – using a typical project to consider requirements for Time, Cost and Quality and also to develop a risk management strategy. That same example project is used in the afternoon as the basis for exercises dealing with the contract management processes.

Attendees of this course will have a much clearer understanding of the intent of the specific contractual clauses and in practical terms begin to see how they should administer them for the benefit of all parties on a particular project.

You will learn about:

  • when the Short Contract and the Short Subcontract are particularly suitable
  • the key differences between the provisions for of the ECC and EC Short Contracts
  • the main changes between NEC3 and NEC4 EC Short Contract
  • preparing the Contract Data and Scope for tender – assessing project risks and writing the Contract data accordingly
  • using ECC main contract clauses by importing them as Z clauses into the Short Contract
  • the roles and responsibilities of the Employer and Contractor for managing design, subcontractors, time, quality, payments and scope change
  • the important ECSC contract management processes, in particular early warnings, communications, progress/time, defects, payments and compensation events
  • assessing compensation events using the defined ECSC processes and other available NEC guidance
  • typical ECSC pitfalls and how to avoid them – based on exercises using a typical project example

Recommended for:

This workshop is at an intermediate level and is recommended for Client, Consultant’s and Contractor’s staff who have some experience of preparing and/or managing NEC3 ECC or ECSC contracts. It assumes some prior experience of either form of contract. The course focusses on practical issues in both preparing and managing the NEC4 form of the Short Contract.

FAQs

Are Synergie Training courses accredited and recognised in the UK?

Yes. Many Synergie Training courses are accredited by recognised industry bodies such as the Association for Project Safety (APS) and are aligned with current UK legislation, including the Building Safety Act and Building Regulations. This ensures training content is relevant, credible and suitable for continuing professional development (CPD).

How is NEC3 and NEC4 assessed?

Assessment methods may include multiple-choice tests, scenario-based exercises, and practical case studies focused on real project situations. Synergie Training ensures that assessments test both technical knowledge and the practical application of NEC contract processes.

How long does NEC accreditation last?

NEC accreditation does not typically expire; however, industry best practice recommends refresher training when contract editions are updated or when individuals change roles. As NEC4 continues to evolve, Synergie Training offers refresher and update courses to ensure professionals remain confident and compliant when working with NEC contracts.

What does NEC stand for?

NEC stands for New Engineering Contract. It is a family of standard contracts designed to encourage good project management, collaboration, and clear communication between parties. Widely adopted across the UK public and private sectors, NEC contracts are a core focus of Synergie Training’s commercial and contract management courses.

What is the NEC qualification?

An NEC qualification confirms that an individual understands the structure, principles, and administration of NEC contracts. It demonstrates competence in managing early warnings, compensation events, programme management, and contractual communication. NEC qualifications delivered by Synergie Training help professionals improve contract compliance, reduce disputes, and manage projects more effectively under NEC terms.

What is the difference between NEC3 and NEC4?

NEC3 and NEC4 are editions of the New Engineering Contract suite used across construction and infrastructure projects. NEC4 is the latest version and introduces clearer contract wording, improved risk management processes, enhanced dispute avoidance mechanisms, and new contract options to reflect modern procurement methods. NEC4 also places a stronger emphasis on collaboration and proactive project management. Synergie Training provides comprehensive NEC3 and NEC4 training to help professionals understand both legacy contracts and current best practice.

Who should attend NEC3 and NEC4 courses?

NEC3 and NEC4 courses are suitable for project managers, quantity surveyors, commercial managers, contract administrators, engineers, and anyone involved in managing or delivering NEC-based projects. Synergie Training designs NEC courses for different experience levels, from introductory awareness to advanced contract administration.

The course was exceptional, well run in terms of delivery of information, IT online course but seamless. Very interesting examples of temporary works failures applicable to the businesses we worked in. Break out activities / group examples worked very well and were again well managed by the trainer. Fantastic course, I will recommend to others! Best course I have attended in years!
