Overview
The course describes the modern role of the operations geologist. It will include duties and responsibilities with respect to well planning, subsurface hazard identification and mitigation, contractor selection and management, HSE, data acquisition planning. During the well execution phase, monitoring of coring, wireline logging, geosteering and pore pressure evaluation. Post well duties including end of well reporting, data distribution and archiving, lessons learned.
Level
Basic-Intermediate – Participants should have knowledge of wellsite operations.
Goals
To give the participant a firm foundation in all aspects of operations geology in well planning, execution and finalisation.
Target Audience
Wellsite geologists (1-5 years) wanting to step up to operations geology.
Operations geologists (beginner to 1 year) wanting to consolidate and enhance their skills.
Course Content (Daily Outline)
Day 1
Introduction to the role of operations geology and relationship to wellsite geology.
Review of some fundamentals
Data Management – the acquisition and distribution of data.
HSE
Well Planning methods.
Day 2
Well planning, continued.
Subsurface hazard identification and mitigation
Data acquisition planning.
Coring and sidewall coring, planning and execution.
Day 3
Contracts and quality assurance of contractors.
Geological contractors.
Mudlogging, LWD/MWD, Wireline.
ERD and Geosteering.
Day 4
Formation Pressure fundamentals and activities.
Day 5
Pore pressure evaluation and activities.
Course finalisation.
Tutor:
33 years industry experience as a mudlogger, data engineer, pore pressure engineer, wellsite and operations geology. He has been providing training courses in all these topics for the last 15 years to oil companies and training providers worldwide. He lectures part time at the universities of Manchester and Derby and is lead facilitator and course creator for BP’s Accelerated Development Programme (ADP) for operations geology. He is a subject matter expert in wellsite and operations geology, wellsite data management, formation pressure evaluation and HTHP wells. He is also experienced in writing procedures and manuals having done so for both Exxon and BP.
