Pavement Design Training
Course duration: 1 Day
Cost: £295 + VAT
The Design Manual for Roads & Bridges (DMRB) dictates how the majority of major highways are designed in the UK. Mandatory for Trunk Road schemes including motorways, it is also utilised by the majority of local authorities and highway design consultants for the design and maintenance of non-Trunk Roads.
Originally published in 1992, the DMRB has undergone continuous review and update to reflect best practice in the industry. It consists of 15 volumes of which Volume 7 “Pavement Design & Maintenance” is a particularly significant element of the suite.
Within Volume 7, pavement design is driven by four key Standards:
HD 24 – Traffic Assessment
HD 25 – (IAN 73) Design Guidance for Road Pavement Foundations
HD 26 – Pavement Design
HD 36 – Surfacing Materials for New and Maintenance Construction
These standards all underwent revision in 2006, with IAN 73 being further revised in Feb 2009.
This one-day course focuses on these Standards and considers their content, impact and implementation in design, providing an effective introduction to pavement design using the DMRB.
This course will enable you to understand the scope and application of volume 7 of the DMRB for pavement design and have the confidence and knowledge to undertake designs to the latest revisions of the key Standards. It will deliver essential advice, knowledge and capability to those involved in pavement design. Supporting sessions consider key properties of asphalt surface courses.
The course is highly interactive and includes presentations, notes, tutorial exercises, case studies and delegate discussion to ensure effective learning outcomes.
The tutor is recognised as a leading authority on asphalts and pavement engineering. He is a Chartered Civil Engineer, a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers and has edited and contributed to several important published texts addressing highway design construction and maintenance.
Objectives
At the conclusion of this course the delegates should:
Have a broad understanding on the structure and scope of volume 7 of the DMRB document
Appreciate the principles of pavement design and asphalt technology
Be confident in the assessment of traffic loading for design
Be familiar with the principles behind the design of pavement foundations
Be able to design pavements with reasonable confidence
Be aware of available surface courses, their behaviour and characteristics
Intended for
Civil, highway, pavement and transportation engineers involved in the design and construction of highway schemes.
