Overview

This intensive 5 day course provides a guide to starting and building your own business and, in addition to sound practical advice on such aspects as generating business ideas, managing personal aspirations, writing business plans, raising finance, returns on investment, company structures, understanding profit and loss and balance sheets, managing profitability and exit strategies, there will be practical sessions’ where students can get hands on experience in developing their entrepreneurial and management skills.
Objectives

This training course will equip students with a broad knowledge of the tools and techniques necessary to establish and successfully manage a business, whether through buying into an existing opportunity or franchise or by setting up their own business.  The course will also provide a sound background into how all successful businesses operate in the private sector.

Pre-Requisites

The course is open to anyone considering going into business or who wishes to better understand the business environment.

Course Content

Day 1 - AM: General overview, legal frameworks, Partnerships and Limited Companies, roles and responsibilities.

Day 1 - PM: Entrepreneurship, generating your own business idea.  Practical session.

Day 2 – AM: Research and business planning.  Where to get key information, who can help

Day 2 – PM: Writing a business plan, contents and target audience.  Practical session

Day 3 – AM: Getting finance and understanding banks, investors, funders and taxation generally.

Day 3 – PM: Financial Management, understanding basic book keeping, balance sheet, profit and loss and cash flow, the use of financial software packages, setting budgets. Practical session

Day 4 – AM: Business models, buying a business, buying a franchise, appraisal and due dilligence

Day 4 – PM: Quality plans. Structuring your business, resources, expansion and exit strategies.

Day 5 – AM: Day to day management, cash flow, wages, creditors and debtors and HR management

Day 5 – PM: Plenary, review and Q and A session.


Outcomes

At the end of the course delegates will have a good practical appreciation of the mechanics of setting up and running their own business, potential opportunities in the business world, how to get sound legal and financial advice and a good overview of their fiscal and corporate responsibilities.  The course price includes the textbook ‘An Entrepreneur’s Book of Checklists’ and a CD with samples of Business plans, budgets, other useful software and contact links.

Trainer

Dr. David Forbes. MICAS

David has a wide range of experience and combines the practical insights of a Chartered Accountant with the academic knowledge that underlies economics and business. With a PhD in Financial Management he lectured University students for 15 years presenting courses such as an MSc in Entrepreneurial Studies alongside undergraduate accounting and Professional level tuition.
He has worked more recently as a Finance Director in a Charity and has enjoyed applying his knowledge of Strategic Financial Management for businesses that need advice to get properly started or just keep going. He has published in several International Journals including topics such as ‘The Value of Mission Statements’ and ‘Entrepreneurial Education and Entrepreneurial Finance’
