Design and Detailing of Highways

Course Duration: 2 Days

Cost: £495 + VAT

There are over 380,000 km of roads in the UK, including 12,000 km of trunk roads and motorways. The design, construction and maintenance of this network places considerable demand on a wide range of engineering skills.

The Department of Transport’s Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB) sets out the requirements for the design and construction of UK Trunk Roads and Motorways. The Manual has been designed to be compatible with quality assurance schemes of both the DOT and design consultants.

The Design Manual pulls together all the various previously published DOT documents, such as the Departmental Standards and Advice Note within a structured manual system.

It is also often used for local road schemes to provide best guidance and as such is a fundamental document for highway design engineers.

This two-day course provides a broad introduction to the key parts of both highway design and detailing and the DMRB manual to ensure designs are accurate, safe and conform to the standards of highway geometry.

Day one delivers an introduction to the DMRB, highway capacity considerations and geometric layout and design. The second day focuses on detailed design aspects including road cross-sections, drainage and pavement design.

The course is highly interactive with workshop exercises and case studies based on practical design problems. Delegate participation is actively encouraged throughout.

Objectives

At the end of this two day course the delegates should be able to:

Appreciate the reasoning behind the design of highway links and junctions
Produce a realistic engineering solution to a link or junction problem, given suitable data
Identify and apply practical details underlying highway design

Intended for

Graduate Civil and Transportation engineers, engineers new to the field of highway design, and construction professionals requiring an introduction to the subject area.
