This course is designed to provide any person working in the construction industry with the basic knowledge relevant to existing legislation and best practice.
Outline
Session 1 Introduction and setting course objectives
Session 2 Injuries and Ill-health in Construction and Maintenance
A review of the causes of injuries and ill-health that occur in construction and the associated accident trends.
Session 3 The Law
An introduction to The Health and Safety at Work etc Act and how this affects management decisions and the formulation of documents
Session 4 Application of the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations
Understanding the scale and types of work to which CDM applies and the definitions used. A review of duty holder’s responsibilities and specific documents/plans.
Session 5 Site Health and Safety Management
How Risk assessments and method statements are prepared. Co-ordination of activities on site. Monitoring and enforcement of the site health and safety rules, procedures and arrangements.
Session 6 Additional Legislation
A review of the other Acts and Regulations covering construction works and how these interact with the CDM Regulations and the duties of specific persons on and off site.
Session 7 Environment
A review of environmental legislation and control measures
Examination
Closed book, multi-choice examination.

Upon completion of the course, delegates should be able to:
understand the obligations placed on all persons involved by the CDM regulations;
have sufficient knowledge of current legislation and accident/ill-health causation to develop a site health and safety culture;
understand the extent and benefits of effective risk assessments and method statements;
know the basic requirements of other Acts and Regulations to be able to compile a strategy/plan to protect employees and others on site.
