CDM2007 Training – Design Risk Management

Construction (Design & Management) Regulations 2007

This course is aimed at those Designers within the construction industry who wish to practice as Design Risk Managers and manage the requirements of design risk and CDM2007 for Designers to a professional and benchmarked standard, as set by Association for Project Safety (APS).

Day 1

Session 1 – Introduction and setting course objectives

Session 2 Design Risk Management and Project Risk Management

A brief introduction to risk and project management during design and an outline to the applications of CDM Regulations.

Session 3 Construction Related Health and Safety Legislation

A synopsis of health and safety related legislation which may have influences on designers for construction works.

Session 4 Personal Safety & Professional Responsibility

Brief summary outlining potential responsibilities of designers visiting livesites, acting as site engineers, engineers to the contract, etc.

Session 5 Role of the Designer in Construction

An overview of the legal duties of designers for risk elimination and reduction, including discussion on who is a designer.

Session 6 Design Risk Management Services & Systems

Discussion relating to designers management systems, project organisation structures, legal liabilities for civil, criminal and professional indemnity.

Session 7 Advising the Client

Strategies and reasoning for ensuring the clients are aware of their responsibilities and suggested benefits this may incur.

Introduction and Setting Course Objectives

Individual Exercise: Benefits of CDM for Clients

Day 2

Session 8 Demonstrating and Assessing Competence and Resources

How to ensure competence and resources can be demonstrated to potential clients. Ensuring the competence and resources of sub-consultants. Discussion about competence, resources & capability.

Session 9 Hazard Identification and Working within the Team

Detailed understanding of the requirements of regulations 11 the CDM2007 regulations, co-operation with the CDM Co-ordinator and co-operation and co-ordination with others

Syndicate Exercise: Identifying and addressing project risks

Session 10 Contractor Related Issues and Design During Construction

Ongoing design during the construction phase, changes to designs, input into temporary works. Co-operation and co-ordination between designers, contractors and the CDM co-ordinator.

Session 11 Designer Input into Information (PCI, CPP & HSF)

Review of design information which may be utilised as part of pre-construction information, construction phase plan, health and safety file and any other contract documents.

Session 12 ExaminationClosed book examination

Session 13 Course Review and Conclusion

Objectives:

On completion of the course, delegates should:

– understand the designers’ duties under the CDM regulations 2007;

– know how to effectively reduce risk by design; and

– be familiar and confident in the supply of information and production of evidence.

Pre-Course Requirements

Those who wish to undertake the course should be familiar with and have knowledge of the construction industry and construction health and safety which is deemed to include:

– H&S Law and frameworks;

– CDM2007 and other relevant construction related health and safety Regulations;

– How the Construction Industry basically is organised and works including different forms of procurement and contracts; and

– Various typical duty holder roles and responsibilities as they apply within CDM 2007, the ACoP (L144) and other regulation and contract conditions.
