Introduction to Renewable Energy Systems

Course Duration: 5 Days

Price: £1495 + VAT

Overview

This 5 day course provides an introduction to the main renewable energy technologies and their application, including current government thinking and planning policy, financial incentives including Feed in Tariffs (FIT’s), economics and cost modeling

Objectives

This training course provides a great opportunity to learn about the main renewable energy systems (RES) and introduces methodologies to assess the feasibility of different RES at specific sites.

Pre-Requisites

The course is open to anyone wishing to gain a further insight into the rapidly expanding renewable energy sector.

Course Content

Day 1 – AM
Drivers for renewable Energy including updates on government policies, Feed in Tariffs and basic principles of power generation.

Day 1 – PM
Small to Medium Scale Wind Power - Resource estimates and site characteristics are discussed and a suitable methodology for turbine selection, tower requirements and power management are outlined.

Day 2 – AM
Solar Water Heating and solar photovoltaics – will examine how solar energy is delivered to the Earth and discuss the basic physics required to exploit it. The course will cover the low-level fluid mechanics and thermodynamics required to understand the how and why of system design.

Day 2 – PM
Biomass Heating – this section will look at how plants store solar energy (allowing an understanding of fuel selection), basic combustion chemistry, flue requirements and basic system design.

Day 3 – AM
Ground and Air Source Heat Pumps – the pro’s and cons of GSHP and ASHP are considered and the ground conditions required are outlined. The importances of total system design (including the building performance) are emphasised.

Day 3 – PM
Small scale hydro-electricity – resource estimate and river flow parameters are the main core of this section, leading to appropriate site identification and turbine selection methodologies.

Day 4 – AM
Other Emerging Technologies – a brief introduction to marine (wave energy), biogas and hydrogen generation systems.

Day 4 – PM
Economics - site based factors that influence RES choice – including resource measurement, energy evaluation and basic economics plus an Introduction to Cost Modelling for renewable projects.

Day 5 – AM
Future of the Industry – Mirspot R & D will outline some of the emerging technologies and developments in the industry. This session includes a site assessment exercise with mixed solutions and processes.

Day 5 – PM
Review and Q & A Session - the course includes interactive sessions in which delegates will discuss the most appropriate renewable energy technology for a number of different scenarios.

Outcomes
At the end of the course delegates will be able to:

● Understand the basics of energy transfer
● Distinguish between the main types of renewable energy technology
● Identify what each technology can do, and what it can’t!
● Be aware of Government commitments and targets on greenhouse gases and renewable energy production
● Start the process of identifying which are the most appropriate technologies for any given situatio
